The Reason

As a student in Edinburgh in the late 80's I was drawn to traditional music sessions in pubs like the Green Tree and Sandy Bells. I loved the informal musical conversations taking place and recognised much of the repertoire but did not have a suitable instrument to participate. My initial motivation for making smallpipes was to have pipes of suitable volume and pitch to join these musical conversations. Playing in sessions is still one of my favourite musical pursuits and I hope that the instruments I have made over the years have facilitated others to convene and enjoy playing together.
