The Sunnyside Set

"Montrose Lunatic Asylum, Infirmary & Dispensary" was founded in 1781 by Susan Carnegie, originally located on Montrose Links. In 1858 the facility moved to a new site on Sunnyside Farm, Hillside, a few miles from Montrose where it became known as Sunnyside Hospital until, sadly, it closed in 2011. The land was sold and has since been developed for housing. On seeing the beautiful old orchard being felled, Ian arranged to get some of the wood, bringing it the 11-mile journey back to his workshop in Edzell. Around the same time Ian was given some wood from a fallen plum tree just outside Inverbervie (20 miles from Edzell).

When one of our existing customers learned that Ian had acquired some of the Sunnyside Hospital apple wood, he asked if Ian would make him a special set of pipes in memory of his grandmother who had been a patient at Sunnyside. The hybrid pipes are left-handed, made in apple wood with plum mounts, sterling silver ferrules and bends and hand-engraved main stock ferrule.

After cutting, waxing and seasoning the wood for 5 years, Ian then made this special set of pipes for his customer who then took them home to Alyth (30 miles from Edzell).
